Swansea City : In-depth on getting players on loan from Liverpool - Report

Monday, 18th May 2026 16:44 by Keith Haynes

Vitor Matos is following up on Swansea City targets who he and ex recruitment specialist Adam Worth worked on before his departure last month. Plus we have the explanation as to why Liverpool were not on Vitor’s shopping list in January.

So, what’s involved ? Thank you to our researchers and of course those who help us almost daily.

We have always had a decent relationship with specific people who have connections to agents plus a number of people within that trade who closely cooperate with the Indy via our support for the Brain Tumour Charity. Those that have been here before will know that, but our reports are read by many thousands, and many new people each day. We will start off with the contact between Vitor Matos and Liverpool FC that has been recently cited. It isn’t as big as some will make out but it is contact, and that contact has come from Vitor Matos. Some people will be asking why this didn’t happen in January ? Quite simply Vitor was only in the job for a matter of weeks back then, he had staffing issues to work on and without that all in place it would have been foolish to start a recruitment campaign. During that month with Worth still at the club the reliance was more about bringing another permanent or soon to be signing in Leo Walta and of course Gustavo Nunes on loan. Having secured Joel Ward on a short term contract the work was continuing.

However, Vitor wanted a clear perspective on the squad, and to do that he needed to assess that over a longer period than five weeks or so. It made sense. Our contact within SEG entertainment believes that Worth had already been monitoring certain academy players throughout the UK and Treymaurice Nyoni (Trey) was on a fairly long list the Swans still possess. Based on that seeing his name linked isn’t a surprise but like all things the Reading born ex Leicester youth player is in demand. There have been inquiries for him and to secure Trey on loan would mean competing directly with the more financially established clubs in the Championship.

Fortunately this isn’t all about money.

Trey prefers to play in central midfield but can play across the park. Recognised for his ‘exquisite’ passing range he has played at every England level from U16 to U20, that’s five age grade inclusions with thirty two appearances, he scores goals too. He is nineteen next month and Liverpool are looking for him to gain some experience away from the club although it isn’t a must do. He has appeared for the first team at Liverpool on thirteen occasions in 2025/26 including five in the Premier League. This in itself tells you that for him to go anywhere it would have to be a almost perfect fit.

Trey Nyoni (below) is a regular straddler of the loose divide between Liverpool's senior team and Academy sides (LFC) Quote on joining Liverpool. "I was thinking I just need to come somewhere where I can learn from the best and train with the best. I thought coming to Liverpool would be good. Coming here and seeing the first-team pathway and players before coming and breaking through, I thought it was good for me to come here and see if I can do the same."

Who is the man that Vitor will be talking to ?

Vitor knows Alex Inglethorpe, the Liverpool academy manager and he’s worked with him at the club. This is his first contact, and will be the person who makes the final decision on any move. That being said this will be after consultation with whoever the Liverpool manager is and his plans, currently that’s Arne Slot’s call, alongside Sipke Hulshoff and Giovanni van Bronckhorst. The latter could leave Liverpool this summer and the name, Etienne Reijnen is being talked about. The Premier League club are also within their own ‘quandaries’ at the moment, and there are predictions of a staff overhaul. Nothing these days is constant.

Then there is the likes of Matt Newberry (sources) who retains an interest in loans, but not solely, he has already be credited with the signings of Mor Talla Ndiaye from Senegal and Austria Vienna's Ifeanyi Ndukwe. He is an advocate of a data-led approach rather than reactive market moves. Yes, football is a simple game and ‘on the eye’ assessments are always done, but that doesn’t tell you the science behind the player, his motivation and overall development. These days that comes from data and analytics regardless of your viewpoint. There is a whole lot more to it of course.

To get a player on loan from Liverpool is more than phone call and most certainly requires good contacts at the club. Ex Wales head coach Rob Page is the current U21 manager. For us Trey is a very good footballer, he is progressing fast and his first team involvements prove this. The question will arise ‘We have a decent midfield at Swansea’ but there are still some issues with those Worth signings Ethan Galbraith committing to another season at Swansea, and we have always believed Marko Stamenić continues to be of interest across Europe.

There needs to be a form of continuation, if that includes Trey Nyoni then the Swans have to impress Liverpool with their own coaching set up and its expectations and expertise in developing him further. Martyn Margetson and Ryan Maye have all but departed so it’s what remains that will be the focus. This is a quality footballer who could easily fit into a very decent Premier League club on a permanent basis.

That alone tells us this is going to be a tough battle to convince all those concerned at Anfield that Swansea City are the right club for him to be tested regularly (a key factor) in the Championship. That will also apply to any other player that Vitor has his eye on at Liverpool.

It won’t be easy. It’s very much in the hands of others.
