Newcastle have held talks with the representatives of Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, according to reports in France.

Posting on his X account, Foot Mercato journalist Santi Aouna said that “a meeting has already taken place” between the Magpies and his entourage.

Camara has been linked with a move to St James’ Park by other media outlets over the last week or so.

It was initially claimed that Monaco were looking for around €30m (£26m) for the Senegalese international, but Aouna believes the actual asking price is €50m (£43m).

Why are Newcastle pursuing the player?

The midfield is expected to undergo a revamp as part of Eddie Howe’s clearout of the first-team squad during the summer transfer window.

Sandro Tonali is among those who has been tipped to leave St James’ Park, although it has been suggested that the club would prefer to keep him.

The Italian’s agent does seem determined to secure his client a move away, so the fact that Newcastle are in the market for a midfielder is not surprising.

There is competition for Camara

The Magpies are not the only Premier League side who are weighing up a bid for the 22-year-old.

Aouna names Liverpool as a potential suitor, claiming that the Reds are being kept “informed” about Camara’s situation and they “could soon step up” their pursuit.

For now, it looks like Eddie Howe’s side have progressed the furthest in negotiations. You wouldn’t expect personal terms to be much of an issue, but negotiating a transfer fee with Monaco may be tricky, unless the Ligue One side are open to lowering their current valuation.
