Jamie Carragher has issued a response to "selfish" Mohamed Salah after the Liverpool forward issued a bombshell social media statement on Saturday.

Salah, 33, who confirmed in late-March that he will leave the Reds at the end of the season, launched a brutal attack on the club and appeared to take aim at Arne Slot following his side's 4-2 defeat at Aston Villa on Friday.

"I have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions. It took hard work and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that," Salah said.

"Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve. I want to see Liverpool go back to being the heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear and back to being a team that wins trophies. That is the football I know how to play and that is the identity that needs to be recovered and kept for good. It cannot be negotiable and everyone that joins this club should adapt to it.

"Winning some games here and there is not what Liverpool should be about. All teams win games. Liverpool will always be a club that means a great deal to me and to my family.

"I want to see it succeed for long after I have moved on. As I've always said, qualifying to next season's Champions League is the bare minimum and I will do everything I can to make that happen."

Reacting to Salah's statement, Carragher, who has previously criticised the Egyptian for speaking about Liverpool in public, criticised him and said it's "not a good look.

"I'm not surprised," Carragher told Sky Sports. "I told everybody, 'something else will come before the end of the season. He'll drop another bomb a little bit like Ronaldo did on the way out of Manchester United'. I thought it may come after the end of the season when he'd moved on, but no.

"Less than two years ago, I called him selfish for doing an interview and I think that rings true again. Liverpool have a really important week. They are still not fully qualified for the Champions League and it should be about Liverpool FC, not Salah FC. It's vital that Liverpool make the Champions League positions, but I'm not surprised and it's not a good look at all."

Ex-Arsenal midfielder Patrick Viera then weighed in on the debate on Monday Night Football and agreed with Carragher's sentiment but went in stronger, saying he is "disappointed" with Salah and admitted he should have left the club last summer.

"I was quite disappointed by the quotes from Salah, because I don't think that will help him, it doesn't help the club and it doesn't help the manager," Viera said.

"There's a lot of frustration on his part because he felt that he didn't contribute. There may be a frustration from his side. He's been benched quite a lot this year and I think a top player like him maybe doesn't understand why he's not on the field.

"When you are a player at that level and you've never been benched, it's really difficult to understand why you are not starting. You get to a time where the best decision for him is to leave the club.

"I think the manager or Liverpool Football Club should have made Salah leave last year. It's a year too late for him to leave. It's not the right time for him to say this. I can understand the frustration but it's below the belt and I’m really disappointed.

"I don't think Liverpool deserve this, he should leave with people remembering what he gave to this football club. He was one of the best Liverpool players in the last 30 or 40 years."

Salah has one final game in a Liverpool shirt before he leaves the club, and that is at home to Brentford on Sunday. Should Bournemouth get a result against Manchester City on Tuesday, they will need a win to seal Champions League qualification.
