Jonathan David does this thing. He makes a sound. Canada’s Iceman, the nerveless record goal scorer who will soon cross the Atlantic to spearhead the country’s World Cup moment, listens to a question, pauses and then does it.
It’s neither an um nor a hmmm. It’s more lyrical and at a higher pitch, not far off someone looking for a note, one that’s certainly more in the la-ti-do territory than do-re-mi. It’s likely the tick of a man whose first tongue is French giving himself momentary pause to consider the query then arrange the answer. But it’s an endearing quirk, too, a little powdery soft aural reminder that the ice isn’t all hard.
