Bashir Humphreys came in for the 23-year-old, who was left out of Mike Jackson’s squad entirely for Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Turf Moor.
Having come off against Arsenal the week before with a tight hamstring, it was assumed the defender hadn’t recovered in time.
But Burnley’s interim chief Jackson revealed it was actually illness, not injury, that was the source of the problem.
“He took a little bit in the game against Arsenal, but it's more an illness thing,” Jackson said.
“He's just not recovered properly in time, so we didn't want to take any real chances with him at this stage.”

Despite not being involved on the final day, Esteve was still in attendance and later shared an end-of-season message on his social media channels.
It comes amid anticipated summer transfer interest in the Frenchman, who made his 100th Clarets appearance during the narrow defeat to Arsenal.
"This season wasn't the one we wanted. Not for you, not for us,” he penned.
“We're sorry that we couldn't stay in the Premier League. We would have loved to make you proud.
“Beyond the result, I'm incredibly proud of what this club means to me, 100 games in the Burnley shirt. The captain's armband on some games . Always a pleasure to represent this badge.
“Thank you for everything. See you soon.”
