Leeds United have plenty of transfer decisions to work through this summer, and contracts expiring in 2027 make for some intriguing developments.
When you look back at the season, Leeds’ performances to finish 14th prove that everyone has played their part superbly.
Those who have been nigh on ever-present under Daniel Farke deserve specific praise. That includes Pascal Struijk on the left side of our defence.
Pascal Struijk’s contract situation leaves Leeds United with key decision – “Senior sources” unsure on future
Struijk has been like marmite in the Leeds fanbase for some time. Personally, I’m not sure how there’s a very vocal opinion that he’s not up to it. He’s been one of our most consistent performers for some time under Farke, only disrupted by injuries, which is of course a red flag still.
His strong performances are recognised by the club, though. The Athletic report that “senior sources” at Elland Road are hoping to retain the Dutchman’s services this summer.
However, Struijk’s contract situation and peak age mean that him remaining at Leeds is not a foregone conclusion this summer.
Beren Cross’ report also outlines that there will be interest in Struijk. So much so, that Leeds already knocked back an approach upon returning to the league, an unspecified offer coming late in August, that was seemingly for good money, but far too late in the window to entertain.
“After eight years at Leeds, his future is uncertain,” Cross wrote on Struijk. “He turns 27 before next season starts and it would be understandable if he felt he was ready to write a new chapter elsewhere. The club, according to senior sources, are keen to retain him, but with one year left on his deal too, the defender holds the cards.
“There will be interest in him, as there was last summer, when Leeds knocked back at least one bid for the Dutchman. If Struijk is to go, along with any of the sales Leeds look to make, the club have to secure a big enough fee to directly help them find a better replacement.”
Leeds United need to weigh up pros and cons to selling Pascal Struijk this summer
There can be reasonable arguments made either way for keeping, or selling Struijk this summer, in my opinion.
I’m currently in the ‘keep’ camp on Struijk, though. He’s been terrific this season and shaken off this notion that he’s not good enough for the Premier League. And, the money it would take to replace him, you’d be hard pressed to find the same quality for cheaper.
However, given his long-running injury concerns and the fact he may well want a new challenge, this may be our best chance of getting the best fee possible.
He’d leave with my best wishes, of course.
