Manchester United manager Michael Carrick may have just sent the clearest possible message yet regarding the future of Manuel Ugarte.
The Red Devils wrapped up their Premier League campaign with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium yesterday.
The starting XI left many people shocked as Manuel Ugarte was left on the bench, despite Casemiro not being available to play after his emotional farewell at Old Trafford last weekend.
Instead of turning to the Uruguayan midfielder, Carrick trusted Mason Mount to partner Kobbie Mainoo in midfield while Bruno Fernandes operated in his preferred number 10 role.
Mount delivered an assured display while Mainoo showed why he is an exceptional talent.
It is widely reported that Ugarte does not have a future at Old Trafford.
Carrick appeared to reinforce those rumours not once, but twice, during the Brighton clash.
Firstly, he selected Mount ahead of Ugarte in central midfield despite the Uruguayan being fully available.
Then, he introduced highly-rated academy midfielder Tyler Fletcher in the second half instead of turning to Ugarte from the bench.
Even Tyrell Malacia was handed an opportunity in front of the travelling supporters while Ugarte remained unused for the entire match.
It has become increasingly surprising to witness how much the 25-year-old has struggled to adapt to the demands of Premier League football.
INEOS received widespread praise when they secured Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain for an initial fee of £42.2 million back in 2024.
The midfielder arrived with a reputation as one of the most aggressive and relentless ball-winners in European football.
However, it is his limitations in possession and lack of composure on the ball that have prevented him from truly standing out at Old Trafford.
United are now expected to strengthen heavily in midfield this summer with plans to sign at least two new midfielders already taking shape.
The Red Devils could even move for a third midfield addition if a strong offer arrives for Ugarte during the transfer window.
