Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe has issued a statement to supporters reacting to our season and making his vow for the season ahead.
A disappointing defeat on the final day of the Premier League season shouldn’t detract one bit from what’s been a terrific campaign.
The objective has been accomplished as we comfortably survived relegation with three games to play. Now, the focus is on how well we approach the summer window.
Paraag Marathe drops Leeds United statement with transfer window “promise”
United chairman Paraag Marathe has been forced into balancing acts throughout each window at Elland Road. The fans want to see ambition, and the club have shown it. Although, they’ve been walking the PSR tightrope – not helped by the former regime’s sub-optimal spending.
PSR ceases to exist this summer. Instead, a rolling one-season ‘Squad Cost Ratio’ (SCR) system takes its place. That forces clubs to spend 85% or less of their revenue across the season, or face potential sanctions.
With the season now concluded, Marathe has issued a message to the fans, in which he discusses plans for the upcoming summer as the club looks to compete with new SCR rules.
“I said last year that the road ahead would not be easy – that is still true,” Marathe wrote. “History shows that the second season in the Premier League can be just as, if not more, challenging as the first. We remain ambitious but measured and deliberate, understanding that it will take three long-fought seasons before we can truly operate like an established Premier League side.
“This summer, instead of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), the Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) will impact our transfer market approach. As our accounts reflect, we spent every penny possible, as promised, to earn promotion and keep the club in the Premier League. Our approach to the transfer market will once again be strategic and disciplined to comply with regulations while striving further to improve, and players will both arrive and depart as a result.”
Paraag Marathe promises another busy Leeds United summer as Premier League consolidation looks within reach
Everything that Marathe says here is spot on.
Of course, Leeds fans are subconsciously sceptical of anything that comes out of a chairman’s mouth. We’re conditioned that way by years of neglect and mismanagement.
But, nothing that Marathe and the 49ers have done since taking over suggests they will fall into the traps that previous ownerships did.
Not backing Marcelo Bielsa was the obvious sliding doors moment under Andrea Radrizzani. That mistake is referenced by anyone who fears that we might fall away again, and understandably so. But, everyone at the club knows full well that can’t and won’t be happening again – Daniel Farke himself said it.
Previous reports said that Leeds would boast a bare minimum transfer budget of £100million. That is likely to all be spent and more, as Marathe notes that players will be leaving on top of arriving.
Expect a few tough decisions in pursuit of consolidation.
