The reasons why Nuno Espirito Santo is leaving West Ham

**West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo is expected to be relieved of his duties as West Ham manager this week, but why?**

Nuno, the highest-paid manager in West Ham’s history, couldn’t do enough to prevent the Hammers’ first relegation in fourteen years.

Not only did the Portuguese manager’s contract include a pay packet like no other, but it also included an option for the club to sack him with no compensation if we were relegated.

A great decision from the club to include that in the contract, and it’s a decision that looks like it’s going to be made at some point this week.

Nuno didn’t keep us up, but he didn’t exactly do a bad job. He took us from a side that was almost resigned to being in the Championship, to a side with a real chance of staying in the Premier League until the final day.

However, some of the bad vibes at the club are heavily down to Nuno, and getting rid of him for free is the perfect opportunity for the club to start afresh with a new manager

According to a recent report from [The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7083336/2026/05/24/west-ham-relegated-premier-league-nuno-transfers-analysis/), there have been a lot of issues behind the scenes with the former Spurs, Wolves, and Nottingham Forest gaffer.

The first being fallouts with players. Callum Wilson, James Ward-Prowse, and most recently, Jean-Clair Todibo. He refused to play Wilson when we needed him, and he expelled Ward-Prowse immediately without giving him a chance to prove himself.

Also, he had a huge argument with Todibo just last weekend after he was subbed off after just 25 minutes in the 3-1 defeat vs Newcastle United.

He has also been criticised for the treatment of his coaching staff. He was given the youth team coaching staff upon his arrival because none of his coaching staff from previous clubs were available, or he had reportedly fallen out with some.

West Ham coaching stalwarts Mark Robson, Steve Potts, Gerard Prenderville, and Billy Lepine became Nuno’s coaching staff before his own additions, Rui Barbosa and Paco Jemez, were added.

We became a much better side after Paco’s arrival, and fans have given him a lot of credit for that. However, that came after Nuno admitted he didn’t trust them. At half-time of the 4-0 defeat to Leeds, Mark Robson reportedly attempted to give the players a rollocking; however, Nuno told him to sit down, and a heated exchange followed.

Whether you think Nuno was right or wrong to stop him, the fact that the manager and his coaching team weren’t on the same page on what seems like a lot of occasions is a complete disaster. Yes, our form improved, but if we got the coaching team right, could it have been better and therefore kept us up?

Well, there’s nothing anyone can do about it now. We’re relegated, we’re in debt, the fans want the owners out, and we need a huge reset. Nuno is going, let’s hope the next appointment is a better one and comes with less drama.
