The 2026-27 season was one to remember for Newcastle United, but mostly for the wrong reasons.
The Magpies made it to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup and the last 16 of the Champions League, but neither can paper over what has been a pitiful Premier League season.
Eddie Howe’s side went from finishing fifth last season to 12th this time around, despite spending the best part of £250million on new signings, and recording some grim stats along the way.
Newcastle lost 17 of their 38 league matches - only the relegated teams lost more - as well as dropping 27 points from winning positions, the highest tally in the division.
And rubbing salt into the wounds are local rivals Sunderland. The Black Cats were in League One when Howe took charge of Newcastle but in their first season back in the Premier League have done the double over the Magpies and qualified for the Europa League for the first time in their history.
