The winner won by a huge margin
There are several high-performing candidates for Leeds United player of the season, all of whom could argue a very strong case to get the honour.
Leeds Live whittled the list down to five prime contenders, one of which was Anton Stach. The midfielder has lived up to the hype surrounding him in pre-season and is one of the first names on the teamsheet.
His free-kicks (who can forget his long-range thumper against Aston Villa?) have been sublime, his transitional play exciting and his ball-winning ability at times vital. But the German is not the player readers chose as their player of the season.
The title also evades James Justin and Gabriel Gudmundsson. Justin - who has three goals - has been a revelation since December onwards, the £8m signing a real defensive utility man who is as reliable as he is versatile.
Daniel Farke circled him as a future coach given his understanding of the game. The same could be said of Gudmundsson as well. His intelligence of when to tackle and when to jockey, and when to attack versus when to stay back, is sublime.
The Swede, who spoke to Leeds Live for a sit-down interview last week, has been so consistent and has shown great mentality to respond to setbacks. He won the Leeds United Supporters’ Trust player of the season as a result of his epic maiden Premier League campaign.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has also been a standout with 15 overall goals for the grand total of £0. While he has suffered barren periods, his attacking outlay has allowed Leeds to get up the pitch and be potent in attack, even if his own figures have had to be sacrificed.
He has also brought experience into the squad, being known to pass on advice and gee up his teammates when they have needed it. However, there is one colleague who fans believe is more vital.
Ethan Ampadu is the core of the team and is named by Farke as his “most important player”. He leads the side both vocally and his in quarter-back-like play - and that is not just with his long throws.
Ampadu loves a good tackle and has halted many a Premier League counterpart in their tracks before sparking the transition. His guarding of the back line has been one huge reason for many of the clean sheets recorded.
The lynchpin has also been the instigator of attacks too, directing the play, spreading the ball and providing cutting passes forward. Ampadu can meanwhile be seen directing and spurring on teammates both emotionally and in regards to tactical instruction.
His off-field impact has been spoken about too, the 25-year-old a leader who pteammates can all of approach, joke with and lean on. His charity work for the club’s Foundation is also extensive.
Ampadu - who won the player of the year and players' player of the season at the club awards last week - is the captain Leeds fans want their skipper to be - a representative of them on the pitch with fight, guts and passion as well as high level quality.
He takes the Leeds Live readers’ player of the year by a huge margin, with 54% of the vote.
Here is how the final results panned out
Ethan Ampadu - 54%
