Aston Villa have slapped an £80million price tag on Morgan Rogers and Harvey Barnes could be his replacement.
Aston Villa are reportedly considering a move for Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes.
Toon chiefs stumped up £38million to sign the 28-year-old from Leicester City in 2023. For the bulk of his time at St James’ Park, Barnes has played second fiddle to Anthony Gordon on the left flank.
However, a more prominent role this season has resulted in Barnes starting 33 games across all competitions, scoring 16 goals. He is entering the final two years of his contract and there has been little talk of an extension.
Aston Villa want Harvey Barnes
The Daily Mail report that Villa could launch a surprise move for Barnes this summer. It is noted that Morgan Rogers could be allowed to leave provided any potential suitor stumps up his £80million asking price.
This would leave space for another offensive player - and Barnes is on their shortlist. The piece highlights how the winger may be attracted to the move as his family live in the Midlands.
As for Newcastle, there is no desperation to cash in on Barnes. However, there is an acceptance following the Alexander Isak saga that every player has a price.
Any buyer would need to pay most of the £38million invested three years ago. With Anthony Gordon likely to depart, Newcastle will already be in the market for a left-winger.
‘I back myself’ - Harvey Barnes
Barnes was bullish after scoring his 16th goal of the campaign away to Nottingham Forest earlier this month. He said: “I'm someone who will always back myself when I get in front of a goal and know what I'm capable of doing.
“I think just that consistency of playing a bit more this year and that confidence in front of goal and on the pitch has gone well for me. I’m obviously delighted with the goal and it's disappointing that it didn't mean more.”
