Newcastle United forward Anthony Gordon is attracting interest from Bayern Munich, but they don’t have the money to prise him away from Saint James’ Park.
According to Bild, they are preparing to offer Newcastle their goalkeeper, Alexander Nubel, to sweeten the deal.
Nubel has been on loan at Stuttgart for multiple seasons, establishing himself as one of the better goalkeepers in Germany’s top flight.
He had an outstanding 2025/26 campaign, helping them qualify for the Champions League by finishing fourth and recording 11.06 goals prevented (11 clean sheets).
However, Bayern want to ship him off and with Newcastle looking for a new goalkeeper, they plan to try and kill two birds with one stone.
Nick Pope is expected to leave the Tyneside outfit this summer, and Aaron Ramsdale will return to his parent club after an uninspiring season.
The Geordies clearly need a new number one to take the reins from Pope, but it should not be Nubel.
Newcastle should steer well clear of any proposal involving the 6ft4 ace.
While the German goalkeeper enjoyed a statistically impressive campaign with Stuttgart, numbers do not tell the full story.
Nubel remains an inconsistent shot-stopper whose concentration levels and decision-making continue to fluctuate too often for a club with Champions League ambitions like the Toons.
There is a reason Bayern want to move him on despite actively searching for Manuel Neuer’s long-term successor.
If Nubel were truly elite, they would already be building around him instead of using him as bait in negotiations.
Also, Stuttgart’s reluctance to make his stay permanent says plenty. They have seen him up close for multiple seasons and still are not fully convinced.
Newcastle cannot afford another temporary fix in goal. Manager Eddie Howe needs a reliable, commanding presence capable of elevating the defence now.
Nubel does not inspire that level of confidence, and the Magpies should be aiming far higher.
