Player seen as Tonali replacement after Champions League impact – Newcastle United identify Serbian

Newcastle United have been left impressed by Club Brugge’s Aleksandar Stankovic, who has an ambitious idea about his future.

A product of the Inter Milan academy, the midfielder was sold to the Belgian club last summer. The Nerazzurri retained a buyback option, which is applicable for this summer and for the summer of 2027.

This decision has paid off, with Stankovic clearly impressing this season. The 20-year-old played 55 times in all competitions, contributing to 14 goals. He also impressed in the Champions League, scoring twice and assisting just as many times.

Sport Witness have covered Tottenham interest in the midfielder and it seems like Newcastle United’s interest has grown.

Stankovic intent on decision

TuttoSport – via FCInter1908, report Inter Milan are keen on bringing the youngster back.

But his performances have attracted interest from Newcastle United and even Brentford. The Magpies specifically see him as a possible replacement for Sandro Tonali, who can leave for Manchester United in the summer.

But this may not find favour from Stankovic. The Serbian sees playing for Inter as his dream and wants to return to Milan. Cristian Chivu sees him as his project, having coached him during his time with the Primavera side.

Even if Inter don’t sign him, Stankovic is in no rush. Instead of moving to Newcastle United, he would rather stay at Club Brugge. He will also play in the Champions League with that, with Eddie Howe’s side having failed to qualify for Europe.

Newcastle United should move on

Considering Stankovic’s intentions, the Magpies shouldn’t be wasting time.

Newcastle United would want someone who is close to the finished product. That’s why a move for Stankovic would be risky.

Considering Tonali’s squad status, only an established midfielder can replace him. Anything else would be a risk and reduce the chances of a return to Europe for the 2027/28 campaign.
