Everton backed over Celtic transfer raid for 'smart signing' after 21-goal season

Celtic and Sweden ace Benjamin Nygren would “be a smart signing” for David Moyes to make reckons Everton FA Cup hero Anders Limpar

Benjamin Nygren has been backed to make a summer transfer to Hill Dickinson Stadium with an Everton FA Cup hero claiming he would “be a smart signing.”

The versatile, attack-minded midfielder who can play centrally or on either wing, netted 21 goals in 58 games for Celtic this season following a bargain £1.7million move from Danish Superliga club Nordsjaelland last June and helped the Glasgow giants to win a domestic double, setting up Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal in the 3-1 win over St Mirren in Saturday’s Scottish Cup final – his ninth assist of the campaign. Starting at home city club IFK Gothenburg, the player, who turns 25 on July 8, previously had spells in Belgium with Genk and the Netherlands on loan at Heerenveen.

Capped nine times for Sweden after making his international debut last year, Nygren has scored on three occasions for his country to date and this month was named in Graham Potter’s squad for the World Cup finals. The Swedes have been drawn in Group F and after kicking off their tournament in Mexico against Tunisia in Monterrey, they face former Everton manager Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands in Houston and then Japan in Dallas.

Anders Limpar, who as a Blues player, was part of Sweden’s squad that finished third in the World Cup on the only previous occasion it was held in the USA in 1994, before helping Joe Royle’s side defeat Manchester United in the FA Cup final the following year to lift what, after a club record-breaking drought, remains Everton’s last piece of major silverware, reckons Nygren could make an intelligent acquisition for David Moyes’ men who looked well placed for a European place going into this season’s run-in before failing to win any of their last seven matches and finishing 13th.

Now 60, Limpar, who grew up as a boyhood Evertonian in Solna, told Betano Online Casino: “Benjamin Nygren has been good for Sweden when he’s played for them. He scored 20-odd goals for Celtic, the champions in Scotland.

“I like him. He is a down-to-earth human being.

“He’s a versatile player, he comes in from the left with his right foot. He is tall.

“He knows the game. I do think Nygren can spread his wings and play for a Premier League club.

“He could do a great job at Everton. He’d be a smart signing,

“The thing is, if he leaves, he can’t play in the Champions League next year because he won’t be at the top five clubs in England.

“But if he wants to take that risk, I wish him all the luck. Why not give it a go?”
