May 26 – AFC Bournemouth have underlined their ambitions with a double boost. First, the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP) Council unanimously approved the Premier League club’s plans to increase the Vitality Stadium’s capacity to more than 20,000 seats.
Then, to match having a bigger stadium, the south-coast club confirmed their first-ever season in European football by qualifying for the UEFA Europa League.
Both events mark a major step in the club’s long-term infrastructure strategy under owner Bill Foley.
The planning approval allows the Cherries to modernise and expand the stadium – currently the smallest in the Premier League with a capacity of about 11,300 – while upgrading the surrounding infrastructure in the Kings Park area. According to AFC Bournemouth, the project is designed not only to increase capacity, but improve supporter experience, and enhance facilities for fans, players, staff, and commercial partners. It will also increase matchday income and underpin the club’s broader commercial growth across ticketing, hospitality, sponsorship, and premium matchday experiences.
AFC Bournemouth president of business Jim Frevola had told councillors the redevelopment was necessary if the club wanted to remain competitive. “If it does not happen, I don’t think you’ll ever see an 11,268-seat stadium in the Premier League again,” he said.
With European football on the horizon, he said the “timing is critical”.
Foley described the approval as a key moment in the club’s long-term vision. “This project is about far more than a stadium,” he said. The project is the latest move in Foley’s expanding multi-sport empire. The American businessman owns the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights, who won the Stanley Cup in 2023, and holds stakes across a growing football portfolio through his Black Knight Football Club vehicle.
BCP Council leader Millie Earl said the club’s progress on the pitch had “now been matched” by the “significant milestone off it”. “What a week for AFC Bournemouth,” Earl said, after the club qualified for next season’s Europa League. She said the club’s success was a “source of pride for many”.
