Newcastle United have not made a proposal to Gremio defender Viery - despite reports from South America.
The 21-year-old stands at 6ft 2in and has been looked at by Newcastle, but Chronicle Live understands there has been no offer for the left-footed centre-back. United are set up to find big stars of the future in Brazil after sporting director Ross Wilson hired Thomas Federspiel from Nottingham Forest.
Newcastle are running more scout searches than ever in Brazil and across South America as a consequence, but that has also resulted in agents linking their clients and using it as a pitch, whenever the Magpies turn up to games across the Atlantic.
And reports of United putting in a £10m bid for the player has now emerged from Brazil, something that has been played down on Tyneside.
Newcastle spies in Brazil have not missed a single round of action so far, with information being inputted to Wilson and Eddie Howe's overall database back at Benton. Nottingham Forest, Brighton & Hove Albion, Benfica, Lille and Bologna have also been credited with a move for the youngster.
It is believed that Viery's rash approach has raised a few question marks on whether he could handle life in the Premier League. He received a recent red card for a horror challenge on an opponent against Internacional recently and was banned.
The 21-year-old is valued at £17m by Gremio, who say they are under no pressure to sell. Viery has made 28 appearances for Gremio and scored two goals during his senior career. Newcastle are already making their presence felt in South America after signing Johan Martínez from Independiente del Valle in Ecuador.
Back then, sporting director Ross Wilson said: “We’re delighted to beat off serious competition from leading clubs across Europe to bring Johan to Newcastle United.
“Identifying and recruiting promising young players is a key part of how we build for the future, and our scouting and recruitment teams have worked diligently to secure Johan’s signature.
“Independiente del Valle have a strong reputation for developing young players and Johan has undoubtedly benefited from that environment.
"He will continue his progress there while we maintain a close connection with his development, and we look forward to welcoming him to Newcastle next year.”
