The 6ft 6in German joined from Stuttgart last summer for a club-record £64million and has endured a challenging debut campaign, despite scoring double figures.
With Alexander Isak sold to Liverpool and fellow summer signing Yoane Wissa injured, Woltemade was thrown straight into the team and enjoyed a very positive start, scoring seven goals between September and November.
But from December, Woltemade’s fortunes began to turn. He scored an own goal in the Tyne-Wear derby defeat away at Sunderland and while he responded with a brace against Chelsea a week later, he has only found the net twice since then.

The 24-year-old was signed as a striker but in the last few months has been used in more of a midfield role. There are, however, times when Woltemade has been named on the bench, restricting him to a cameo appearance or no minutes at all.
Woltemade acknowledged the ‘high and lows’ of his first season at St James’ Park, but knows one constant was the love and support of the Newcastle fans.
Taking to Instagram to post an end-of-season message, Woltemade wrote: “Highs and lows, but your love and support has been undeniable. Thank you, Geordies!”

Speculation - mainly created by the German media - has surrounded Woltemade’s future but Eddie Howe has said he wishes to keep both him and Wissa, who has struggled to get up to speed after being sidelined for the opening three months of his Newcastle career with a knee injury.
“Yeah, I do,” Howe said when asked if he sees Woltemade and Wissa at the club next season. “It's difficult for me to give absolute certainty to that because the players themselves will have a big say in that as well. But my wish is that they are both here.
“I really think they've got outstanding qualities. I think they can make a difference. They're very different players, of course, I wouldn't compare them, but I think they can really help the team.”
