Leeds United supporters have been given their first look at construction work getting started on the £150million Elland Road expansion project.
Planning permission was secured back in early January this year to expand Elland Road, with the aim to increase the capacity to 53,000.
It will see the Whites’ iconic home upgraded to UEFA Category 4 status, whilst also bringing about improvements to the matchday experience for supporters, such as sightlines and amenities.
The expanded capacity will also help to reduce the 26,000-long season ticket waiting list, as well as providing Leeds with the opportunity to potentially host major international tournaments and events.
On top of all this, the expansion is also forecasted to generate tens of millions of pounds into the wider Leeds community, as well as open up increased revenue for the football club through more ticket sales.

Shovels in the ground as Elland Road expansion work starts
It’s been questioned whether the Elland Road expansion could see its soul lost, as part of the charm and intimidatory factor of the venue is that fans are right on top of the pitch, and sell-outs are a routine.
However, Leeds chiefs will be well aware of that, and so it’s hoped that they will have considered these concerns when crafting the vision of what the expansion will look like.

Now that the 2025-26 season is done, the summer presents an opportunity to get work started on constructing this new-look version of Elland Road.
As shown in an X post from journalist Adonis Storr, we can see diggers starting work behind the Don Revie North Stand, as well work starting behind the John Charles West Stand as well.
The shovels are in the ground at the home of #LUFC, as the first signs of the transformation of Elland Road are appearing.
The initial construction stage of the project will expand the John Charles West Stand from the existing capacity of 8,000 to 17,552.

This marks an exciting development in the expansion of Elland Road, but fans will have to remain patient for now, as it still appears to be some time yet before everything will be finished.
When will Elland Road expansion be completed?
As reported by Storr in his aforementioned X post detailing the new images of work being done at Elland Road, the first focus of the project will be on the John Charles West Stand.
Storr reports that it’s hoped this stand will be completed by the end of 2028, which will take the capacity of Elland Road to around 47,000 when finished.
Attentions will then turn to the Don Revie North Stand, with it claimed that work is scheduled to begin here at the beginning of 2029, with the aim to have everything sorted before the end of 2030.
Excitement levels will have to be contained for a little while longer then, but if and when the expansion project is completed by 2030, it will hopefully have been worth the wait for Whites supporters.
