Leeds United were ‘heartbroken’ about selling Archie Gray in 2024. But, we’ve since leapfrogged Spurs with our survival in 14th this season.
The 49ers are not like other Leeds owners, in the sense they’re actually making the right decisions more often than not.
When we failed to claim promotion in Daniel Farke’s first season, though, it looked as though we were being stripped of every big asset. It’s since worked out pretty well.
“Having a laugh” – Jamie O’Hara slates £40m Spurs midfielder Archie Gray
After that heartbreaking playoff final, Leeds confirmed the exits of Archie Gray and Georginio Rutter for £40million apiece, either side of Crysencio Summerville’s £25million transfer.
Gray joined Spurs looking to regularly compete in Europe and at the top end of the table. Instead, back-to-back finishes in 17th have followed. They avoided relegation on the final day of this season with a win against Everton.
The former Leeds teen has been a regular for Spurs in that time. His versatility has been commended too, playing almost everywhere. Although, Jamie O’Hara believes he’s “bang average”.
“I’ve got no connection to any player at Spurs. There’s not one player where I go ‘I love him’,” O’Hara told talkSPORT, as Alex Crook suggested Gray.
“Do me a favour, Archie Gray, he’s bang average. Come on, are you having a laugh? We’ve finished 17th the last two seasons and he’s played the most games. Let’s not hang our hats on people like Archie Gray.
“It’s not harsh, he’s done alright, but he’s not carried the team. I’m not saying he’s a bad player, but come on lads, are we talking about Tottenham getting into the top four?”
Leeds United may be proven right to sell Archie Gray for huge £40m sum
We all knew that it was going to take an absurd fee to prise Gray from Elland Road in 2024. £40million looked fair at the time, and it’s more looking like we’ve got the better end of the deal.
Not only have we since overtaken Gray and Spurs this season by finishing above them, but we’re now seeing Gray not regarded as highly as he was when he left us.
I think, shock horror, O’Hara is being over-the-top here. Gray is undoubtedly a talented player that will benefit immensely from Roberto De Zerbi instilling some stability and actual coaching quality
Gray, with a better side around him, will do much better for Spurs. That £40million is still looking quite nice from our end though.
