Schar, 34, is out of contract on June 30 but discussions between the player’s representatives and sporting director Ross Wilson are ongoing.
The former Switzerland international joined the Magpies from Deportivo La Coruna in 2018. Costing £3million, he is widely regarded as one of the best bargains in the club’s recent history.

From a change of ownership, to battling relegation, qualifying for the Champions League and winning a trophy, Schar has witnessed it all during his eight years on Tyneside.
Newcastle United in talks with Fabian Schar over a new contract
Schar hasn’t featured for Newcastle since January, first because of an ankle injury before being hit with a foot infection but even after a long lay-off, head coach Eddie Howe believes the centre-back still has a lot to offer.
“I've had a few discussions with Fabby,” Howe said on Friday. “Discussions are now with Ross [Wilson] and [Schar’s] agent, and we hope to reach a successful conclusion.
“Fingers crossed, yeah. We want Fabian to stay. I think he's got a lot to offer. I think we've missed him since he's been injured. We've missed his distribution and his passing from deep has been a big miss for us. The way he accelerates our attacks.
“We wouldn't be keeping anyone that we didn't feel could help the team. I think Fabian's been unbelievable for us. Until it's signed, it's not done. But I still feel he has a lot to offer.”
Ross Wilson has already agreed two other new Newcastle United contracts
Tying down Schar to a new contract - likely to be a one-year extension - would be the third major player contract Wilson has negotiated since arriving from Nottingham Forest last October.
Newcastle announced a new four-and-a-half-year deal for Sven Botman in January before this week revealing Miley had extended his stay until 2032.
"This is something we have been working on quietly for a number of months,” Wilson said. “Lewis already had a long contract with us, but we felt it was important to reward his continued progression and development.”
