Sunderland have wasted no time in poking fun at Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer after qualifying for the Europa League.
Sunderland’s social media team could not resist a cheeky swipe at Alan Shearer following their Europa League qualification.
The Black Cats secured a European finish for the first time in 53 years with a 2-1 win over Chelsea on the final day. Newcastle United endured a dismal campaign - losing both Tyne-Wear derbies - and their misery was compounded by Sunderland’s success.
Eddie Howe’s men could only muster a 2-0 defeat at Fulham to finish 12th in the Premier League. Watching the Black Cats celebrate must sting Newcastle as they prepare to rebuild this summer.
Sunderland fire social media swipe
Continuing their celebrations, Sunderland’s social media team had Shearer front and centre in a montage of pundits writing them off. In the first clip, the Toon icon said: “They'll struggle and it will be really tough for them, so I have them being relegated again.”
Another snippet showed Shearer claiming that Sunderland’s promotion 12 months ago would equate to six easy points for the Magpies. As expected, hundreds of Black Cats fans flooded the comments with words that should fuel Newcastle ahead of next season.

I mean, they signed 14 players last summer, around £160million. And their home form has played a huge part in that, as we thought it would do.
“And yes, they beat Newcastle home and away. They're in the Europa League, and they've had a fantastic season. I mean, it's incredible for a promoted side to finish in the Europa League.”
