One week ago today, came Aston Villa’s greatest moment of the 21st century so far.
At Beşiktaş Park, Istanbul, just before midnight local time, the final whistle sounded to tie up an emphatic 3-0 victory for Unai Emery’s men over German side SC Freiburg.
And, with that, came Villa’s first major trophy in over 30 years, and only a second major European honour in the club’s 151-year history.
They had won the UEFA Europa League, with goals from Youri Tielemans, Emi Buendía and Morgan Rogers sealing a win in the final in style, capping off a fine campaign in the competition and another memorable season under Emery.
John McGinn led his teammates with distinction all evening, and walked over to the stage to hold the trophy aloft, as Villans both on Turkish soil and back at home partied long into the night.
It is a day, and indeed a week, which will live long in the memory for supporters all over the world, as Villa’s current crop channelled the spirit of 1982 and wrote their own names into Aston Villa folklore.
