Brighton midfielder Diego Gómez has arrived in Paraguay with confidence restored after his recent injury scare, and the player is already setting ambitious targets ahead of the World Cup.
The 21-year-old travelled back to join the Paraguay national team camp this week following growing optimism around his fitness situation.
Gómez had sparked concern after suffering a knee issue against Tottenham, but the latest signs continue to point in a positive direction.
As we covered recently, both Brighton and the player’s camp have been increasingly relaxed about the situation. Gómez himself has now reinforced that message publicly.
His performances this season have already generated transfer noise around the Premier League. Manchester City have previously been linked, while Paraguayan reports continue to insist elite clubs are monitoring him closely.
For now, though, Gómez’s focus is firmly on Paraguay.
Gómez sends ambitious message
Speaking after arriving at Silvio Pettirossi Airport, as relayed by South American outlet D10, Diego Gómez made it clear he is approaching the World Cup with major ambitions.
“Any player dreams of playing in a World Cup. Right now I’m thinking about training and working every day to face each match in the best possible way.”
However, he then went much further when discussing Paraguay’s mentality heading into the tournament.
“We are here to become champions, that’s the mentality we have. We have to go step by step, think about each training session and each match. It’s true that we have a difficult group. But we need to think about what’s coming and leave everything on the pitch.”
That confidence reflects the growing belief around Paraguay’s current generation. Gómez is increasingly viewed as one of the leaders of that group despite his age.
Injury fears fading away
Diego Gómez also addressed the injury concern directly and admitted the initial moment caused genuine fear.
“It was a scare. I imagined it was going to be something bad, but it wasn’t serious.”
The Brighton midfielder then confirmed he already feels fully recovered.
“I’m already at 100% and getting minutes again so I can be in good condition for the World Cup.”
That will come as welcome news for Brighton as well. And there is already a feeling that the World Cup could become another major turning point in his career.
If Paraguay perform well and Gómez maintains his current trajectory, the attention around Brighton’s midfielder is only likely to intensify further.
