Former Hibs player 'expected' to leave Sunderland as star to turn 'one of the most…

The former Hibs player has shone for Sunderland after time in Leith.

A former Hibs player is being linked with a summer transfer window exit from Sunderland.

In the winter of 2024, attacker Eliezer Mayenda joined Hibs on loan from Sunderland alongside Nectar Triantis, heading back to the Stadium of Light after just four appearances of not much note. He used that learning curve to great effect though as he returned south, scoring 10 goals and contributing five assists in the 24/25 campaign for the Black Cats, proving key to their successful Premier League promotion bid.

Mayenda signed a new contract until 2030 last summer but has fallen behind Wilson Isidor in the forward line. He’s played 24 games overall with two goals and an assist, still only 21, but Foot Mercato claim an exit from Sunderland could come in the upcoming summer. He is reportedly set to be a sought after Premier League commodity during this window.

Will Eliezer Mayenda leave Sunderland this summer

It’s stated: “Eliezer Mayenda is expected to leave Sunderland this summer. Having delivered some impressive performances over the past two seasons, including two Premier League goals last season, the Spanish youth international striker is coming off a solid campaign, marked by a key role in the club's promotion and subsequent successful return to the Premier League, culminating in a historic Europa League qualification.

“His performances and career path have clearly caught the eye of several ambitious European clubs, who are now closely monitoring his situation before the opening of the summer transfer window. At just 21 years old, the Sochaux academy graduate is emerging as one of the most sought-after attacking prospects in the Premier League and could be a perfect fit for a club looking to bolster its attack.”

Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris said of Mayenda’s Sunderland status earlier this month: "We had this conversation earlier this season I think, we have two strikers and a half if we say that Eli can also play as a ten, as a winger. Sometimes he plays in different positions [so he is not only a striker].

"But the game time is probably more for two [strikers] in this situation. So Brian Brobbey is doing well at the minute, he's dominant in his position and the second striker in the good spot at the minute is Wilson. They had the opportunity, both Eli and Wilson, to have some minutes. The best one at the minute, because it's always a question of dynamic and it's evolutive, was Wilson and Eli has to wait.

"It doesn't mean that I don't trust Eli or that I don't think that he's a good player but this is the momentum and you have to manage it. It's always hard because for a player, starting is key. It drives their life. If I'm a starter, it's really positive. If I'm on the bench, I'm not happy. It's always the case for a footballer but when you play in the Premier League, in a strong squad like ours today, you have to accept the competition. Otherwise, you can't sustain competitive life in this world. So it's part of the process, part of their learning curve. We support them and they have to be patient."
