Big Nuno update as West Ham make decision over Wolves title winner

The former Wolves boss was reportedly heading for the sack after West Ham’s relegation.

Speculation had been rife around the future of former Wolves boss Nuno - after he watched his West Ham side drop out of the Premier League on Sunday.

The title winning former Wolves chief had failed to keep the Hammers in the top flight - as Tottenham’s victory at Everton saw them drop back into the Championship for the first time since 2011.

Since the relegation was confirmed, speculation had been rife over his future.

On Monday it was claimed talks had taken place and Nuno, who led Wolves to the title in 2018 with a total of 99 points, was set to be sacked.

However, on Tuesday it was then reported that some board members wanted Nuno to remain at the club - and that is what is now going to happen.

In a statement, West Ham have explained that the ex-Wolves man has committed to the London club despite failing to beat the drop.

The club said on their website that he remains motivated to take West Ham up at the first time of asking - as they cited his previous success in the division with Wolves.

A statement read: “We held meetings with Head Coach Nuno Espírito Santo early this week and are pleased to confirm that he has expressed his continued commitment to the Club – as we have to him.

“Nuno made it very clear that he is highly motivated for the challenge of guiding West Ham United back to the top flight at the first time of asking. That must be the unquestionable goal for next season. Nuno has spent one previous year in the EFL Championship and it was an outstanding success as he secured 99 points to win the title with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2018.

“While the ultimate outcome on Sunday was a painful one, the Board of Directors believe that there have been broader signs of improvement and progress in recent months, and we want Nuno to continue developing that progress.”

There had been some debate among Wolves fans over whether the club should make a move for Nuno this summer amid criticism of Rob Edwards following a poor end to the season.

In a Express & Star poll earlier this week, 67 per cent of fans polled said they would be open to making a move for the former title winning boss, if he was to become available.
