Andoni Iraola would be attracted by the Liverpool job, but there is no certainty that Arne Slot will be sacked this summer.

That is according to former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes it is not the Reds’ style to sack a manager just two years into their tenure at Anfield.

Pressure is building on the hierarchy to make a decision on Slot’s future, though, especially after his team fell to fifth in the Premier League table and narrowly qualified for the Champions League on the final day.

Slot is certainly at risk of being sacked, with Iraola a highly regarded figure on Merseyside, but it remains to be seen if the latter would move to Liverpool straight after leaving Bournemouth as a free agent.

Ahead of the Reds’ final game of the season against Brentford, rumours were beginning to spread that Slot could be sacked before the 2026-27 campaign, but those whispers have since gone quiet.

Everton’s former chief Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – has revealed what he’s heard about the manager situation.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness said: “It now seems to be AC Milan coming to the fore as his preferred option. I’ve been making some calls this morning, but I haven’t heard if that’s true or not.

“Liverpool, obviously, would be an attraction to him. But I think this would be a difficult situation for Liverpool to start changing managers so early. It would only be after two seasons of Slot.

“That’s not really quite the Liverpool style. So I tend to think they’re going to stay with him. But I’d say that may be because of the lack of a really suitable replacements that they’d be looking for rather than anything else.

“There’s a case to be made both ways, but it’s going to be a difficult decision, and Slot has certainly got to start next season well if he’s there. Otherwise, he’ll be crying for his head very, very quickly.”
