Gordon is expected to leave Newcastle in the coming weeks after failing to feature in their remaining six matches of the 2025-26 season.

The 25-year-old missed games against Bournemouth and Arsenal with a hip injury but didn’t make it off the bench against Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest, West Ham United and Fulham when he returned to the matchday squad.

In a question about Gordon’s omission, Eddie Howe admitted to picking his team with a “partial view to the future”.

Barcelona join Bayern Munich in race for Anthony Gordon

Bayern Munich had been the frontrunners to sign Gordon, holding talks with both the player and Newcastle. However, it’s widely reported that Barcelona are in the driving seat.

Gordon’s representatives were pictured in Barcelona earlier this month. Now the La Liga club, who dumped Newcastle out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage, are acting on their initial interest.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano wrote on Instagram: “Barcelona go 𝐀𝐋𝐋 𝐈𝐍 for Anthony Gordon, 𝐎𝐅𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐓𝐀𝐋𝐊𝐒 underway with club and player. Barca mission in England with director Deco was for Gordon…the player is open to a potential move, waiting on Newcastle.

“𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐞𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐛𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐧 — working behind the scenes on the deal in a 𝐁𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐋𝐄 for the winger. Barca are gonna push, as @mundodeportivo report.”

Anthony Gordon likely to have played his last game for Newcastle United

Gordon joined Newcastle from Premier League rivals Everton for £45million in January 2023 and in his first full season won the club’s Player of the Year award.

The Scouse winger has gone on to make 152 appearances and score 39 goals, 10 of which came in this season’s Champions League. He hasn’t featured since the 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace on April 12.

Howe was asked if Gordon had played his last game for Newcastle ahead of the final day defeat at Fulham on Sunday and replied: “That's a difficult one for me to comment on in terms of how he should be remembered because that's us almost saying that he is going, and there's no guarantee. We don't know at this moment whether it will be his last game.

“Obviously, I've picked a team, as I've said many times in the last few weeks, that's been performing well. Anthony has come back from injury. He's been great around the group. He's been absolutely part of the team, so, there's been no issues.

“Let's see what happens. I think the right time to give an answer to that question will be if he does leave. And then I'll obviously discuss that with him.”

Gordon will soon link up with England for friendlies against New Zealand and Costa Rica before jetting off to North America for the World Cup.

It remains to be seen if Gordon’s future will be decided before the Three Lions open up the tournament in North America against Croatia on June 17.
