Uncapped former Leeds winger named in Premier League-heavy World Cup squad

Former Leeds United forward Crysencio Summerville has broken into the Netherlands squad just in time for the World Cup.

The winger, who was relegated from the Premier League with West Ham United on Sunday, is in line to make his international debut at the tournament, or more likely in one of two warm-up matches before it.

As well as Championship Summerville, there are 14 Premier League players in the 26-man Dutch squad but not Jeremie Frimpong, who has been dropped after a difficult and injury-restricted debut season at Liverpool. Three of his Anfield team-mates are included, along with three Brighton and Hove Albion players.

Inter Milan's Denzel Dumfries – the only non-Premier League defender in the squad – and Jurrien Timber, who has not played for Arsenal since March because of an ankle injury were preferred at right-back to Frimpong.

Summerville has represented the Oranje at every age group from under-16 up, winning the European Under-17 Championship in 2018.

He joined Leeds from Feyenoord in 2020, and was sold to West Ham in a £25m-plus deal four years later as the Whites tried to balance the books after losing the Championship play-off final.

The Netherlands host Algeria on Wednesday, and play Uzbekistan in their final warm-up game, in New York.

They have been drawn in a group with Ao Tanaka's Japan, Gabriel Gudmundsson's Sweden, and Tunisia.
