Manchester United have disclosed that dismissing Ruben Amorim and his coaching staff set the club back £16.7million. United terminated Amorim's contract along with his backroom team in January.

The Portuguese manager lasted merely 14 months at the helm after taking over from Erik ten Hag as head coach in November 2024. The former Sporting boss presided over United's slide to 15th place, their worst-ever Premier League finish, alongside a Europa League final loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

Amorim's spell at Old Trafford was marred by erratic results and confused tactics. The 41-year-old faced widespread criticism for his rigid approach, having persisted with a back-three system throughout most of his time at the club - despite pressure to demonstrate more adaptability.

Darren Fletcher initially stepped in for two matches before former midfielder Michael Carrick was brought in until the end of the campaign.

The ex-Middlesbrough manager has enjoyed a prosperous stint thus far - securing United's return to the Champions League before being given the role on a permanent basis.

As United look ahead to a promising future under Carrick, the club's most recent financial accounts have shown encouraging figures - notwithstanding the expense of parting ways with Amorim.

The club reports an operating profit of £37.7m across nine months to March 2026, in contrast to a £3.2m deficit during the equivalent period the previous year. United's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation for those nine months stand at £187.5m - a rise from £145.3m in the previous year.

United attribute improvements to their financial position to cost-cutting measures off the pitch since Sir Jim Ratcliffe joined as co-owner, which have included staff redundancies across the club.

Nevertheless, the club still carries $650m (approximately £483m) in debt inherited from the Glazer era, while short-term borrowing has climbed to £262.5m - roughly £50m higher than the same period last year.

United's most recent accounts have also been impacted by the absence of European football at Old Trafford for the first time in ten years. The men's first team were additionally eliminated from both domestic cup competitions at the first-round stage this season.

However, United will no longer face free midweeks from next season after securing Champions League qualification under Carrick. The club stands to receive a minimum of £16m in prize money as a result of their return to European football's premier competition.
