The former Newcastle United captain is best known for scoring 260 Premier League goals.

He began his career at Southampton before firing Blackburn Rovers to the Premier League title in 1994–95, scoring 34 league goals that season.

In 1996 he joined his boyhood club Newcastle United for a then world‑record £15m and went on to become their all‑time leading scorer.

A nine ft bronze statue of him stands outside Newcastle’s St James’ Park in recognition of his iconic status with supporters.

For England, Shearer scored 30 goals in 63 appearances and was top scorer at Euro 96 as the national team reached the semi‑finals.

Since retiring, he has worked as a high‑profile TV pundit, particularly on BBC’s Match of the Day, and has been inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame.
