Tonali story takes major twist as Newcastle and Man Utd now both going for "freak athlete"…

Sandro Tonali may be dreaming of bigger and better things this summer, but both current club Newcastle and top suitors Manchester United are now eyeing a La Liga star in his position.

Newcastle & Man Utd targeting midfield addition

There's plenty of drama to come in the Premier League this summer. Several sides need major reinforcements, with Newcastle near the top of that list following such a disappointing campaign.

After losing Alexander Isak for a record fee, the Magpies splashed out on Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa - only for neither of the forwards to make their mark. Now, one year later, they're facing further exit concerns.

Anthony Gordon is almost certain to leave amid interest from Bayern Munich and Barcelona. The latter have even made contact with Newcastle about a potential move.

He's one to watch...

Tonali, meanwhile, is also one to watch. He's caught the eye of Man United as the Red Devils aim to complete a midfield rebuild. A move to Old Trafford would hand him the chance to play Champions League football, something that Newcastle can no longer offer.

That's not to say he's the only one on INEOS' shortlist, however. According to SportsBoom, Man United are now going for Javi Guerra in a fresh alternative to Tonali this summer. The Spaniard is attracting plenty of attention right now and will be available for just €40m (£35m) in the coming months.

That may be that for Tonali's Man United dream, but that's not where his problems end. SportsBoom also report that Newcastle are racing to sign Guerra, who would certainly challenge the midfielder for his position at St James' Park.

"Freak athlete" Guerra would take Premier League by storm

Guerra won't steal the same headlines as Elliott Anderson or, indeed, Tonali this summer, but he could make a similar impact. Dubbed a "freak athlete" by Como scout Ben Mattinson, the midfielder is still just 23 years old and on the radar of several impressive clubs for good reason.

As a Tonali alternative, Guerra wouldn't offer the same defensive strength out of possession, but he would offer more creativity going forward. This would only add to the frantic frontline that Michael Carrick has formed at Old Trafford or perhaps finally get Newcastle's frontline going.

The Magpies have been far too blunt going forward since Isak departed. The arrival of a new chief creator in Guerra could change that at long last. Whether that comes at a cost for Tonali remains to be seen, however.
