It was reported after Crysencio Summerville’s move to West Ham that Leeds United could be in line for certain add-ons, some of them based on international recognition.
There’s been quite a few interesting sub-plots to this Premier League season that have made Leeds’ survival all the more sweet.
Not least the fact our 14th-place finish means we sit higher than two players who left in 2024. Spurs’ Archie Gray in 17th, and West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville, the latter of course relegated in 18th.
Leeds United could be set to gain add-ons from West Ham – Crysencio Summerville is called up to Netherlands World Cup squad
When Summerville left Leeds for the London Stadium in August 2024, the up front fee that the Irons paid was reported to be £25million.
However, it was claimed by Sean Whetstone that the East London club also committed to £9million in add-ons too. As much as £4million of that hinged on Summerville earning a first senior international cap.
Summerville ended up missing out on Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands squad during the March internationals due to horrible injury timing. Although, the winger has his chance now.
The Oranje have confirmed their squad for the World Cup next month. Amongst the squad, Summerville has earned his place in the 26-man squad despite West Ham’s relegation.
That means, should these reported sell-on clauses be valid, that United will earn more money from West Ham very soon.
Leeds United get last laugh on West Ham after Crysencio Summerville saga
It’s great to know after losing Summerville, Gray, and Georginio Rutter that we’re sat safe in the Premier League at the expense of one of them.
Summerville should have left with the best wishes of every Leeds fan. He didn’t down tools like many think he did. Instead, he gave everything to get us promoted. And, he also returned to pre-season professionally in the summer, but a move was inevitable.
However, we’ve had the last laugh over West Ham here. They poached our best player, only to be leapfrogged and consigned to the Championship at our hand.
I do wonder what happens for Summerville now. I’m expected a move (not to Leeds), and this World Cup could be a huge opportunity to orchestrate a better move than he’d get right now.
