Leeds United’s 2025 signing could leave ASAP – Sporting director teases imminent approach

Leeds United signed Sebastiaan Bornauw as cheap and cheerful backup to the centre-back position. After a solid season in just that role, he could be on the move already.

Leeds’ approach to the transfer market after promotion had to be measured to make the most out of what proved to be a restrictive budget under PSR guidelines.

That meant low-value signings in numerous positions in order to plug most gaps. Part of that approach was the signing of Wolfsburg centre-back Sebastiaan Bornauw.

FC Koln chief indicates possible move for Leeds United’s Sebastiaan Bornauw

The £5million Belgian did his role admirably as a backup centre-back option. He produced a handful of noteworthy performances away at Anfield, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, plus at home to Manchester United and Brighton.

However, if Bornauw holds ambitions of playing regularly, a move away might be on the cards this summer, and, he won’t be short of interest.

Previous reports have strongly linked Bornauw with a move back to tbe Bundesliga witrh FC Koln. Now, the German club’s sporting director Thomas Kessler has confirmed that on-loan centre-back Cenk Özkacar won’t have his buy option triggered.

That leaves Koln in need of a new centre-back signing this summer, which is where Bornauw could enter the frame, according to Bild.

“We told him that we will not pull the purchase option,” Kessler said of Özkacar. “Humanly, Cenk is a huge loss. Our final conversation was very positive despite the negative news, he wished us and the club only the best. But we had our topics with the standards, offensively as well as defensively. We need to get better.”

Leeds United could improve on Sebastiaan Bornauw with new centre-back depth signing

At present, we don’t know what happens with Pascal Struijk, but if you were to say none of our starting three centre-backs left or had to be replaced, you’d be fine with that.

They have all shown to be a perfect balance for each other in a bottom half side looking to stay in the division. So, there’s no real pressure to improve a great deal.

However, with Bornauw likely to have interest to leave, we have the chance to add to that group and instil some real competition at centre-back.

Whether it’s someone to displace the likes of Joe Rodon and Struijk, or to add depth to that position, it’s an area we could explore if Bornauw leaves.
