Oakleigh Cannons have not qualified for the Australia Cup after suffering a 2-1 extra-time defeat to Brunswick Juventus in the Dockerty Cup.
The NPL side fell to VPL1 outfit Brunswick Juventus in a hard-fought knockout clash, ending the Cannons’ hopes of reaching the national Round of 32.
Oakleigh made the perfect start to the match, taking the lead in just the 10th minute through the in-form Lebib Lebib, who continued his recent strong run of performances.
Despite the early advantage, the visitors were unable to hold on as Brunswick Juventus gradually worked their way back into the contest. Marko Basic levelled the scores in the 43rd minute, sending the two sides into halftime locked at 1-1 with qualification still hanging in the balance.
The second half proved tense and cautious, with both teams searching for a breakthrough but unwilling to take major risks. Neither side could find the decisive goal in regular time, forcing the match into extra time.
The winner finally arrived in the 111th minute through experienced Juventus midfielder Sean Ellis. His strike sparked celebrations among the home supporters and secured Brunswick Juventus a place in the final 32 of the Australia Cup.
For Oakleigh Cannons, the defeat comes as a significant blow, with the Greek-Australian club now turning its full attention to the NPL season.
“A very disappointing result for the boys, but football moves quickly and our focus now turns to this Saturday night as we take on Altona Magic away from home,” the club posted on Facebook post-match.
“We regroup, respond and go again.”
