It had become apparent that the 25-year-old would be leaving this summer after he was left on the bench for the Magpies’ final four Premier League matches of the season.

And it has taken just three days of the campaign ending for that to be confirmed after negotiations progressed rapidly with the Spanish giants on Wednesday.

For several weeks, Bayern Munich looked to be Gordon’s most likely destination after the player agreed to a move, however, what the Bundesliga champions were willing to pay fell short of Newcastle’s valuation.

That allowed Barcelona to swoop in and agree a €80million fee, which is around £69.3million. Gordon is set to undergo his medical in Catalonia on Thursday, as well as put pen to paper on a long-term contract.

Newcastle United agree to sell Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69m

Newcastle have made around a £24m profit on Gordon, though 15% of that, which works out at around £3.6m, will go to Premier League rivals Everton after they negotiated a sell-on clause in the £45m agreement that took Gordon to Tyneside back in January 2023.

After needing the first six months to acclimatise to life under Eddie Howe, Gordon was excellent during his full first season at the club, deservedly winning the club’s Player of the Year award.

In total, Gordon made 152 appearances and scored 39 goals, 10 of which came in this season’s Champions League. He scored against Barcelona in the league phase game at St James’ Park but wasn’t on target in either leg in the last 16 as Newcastle lost 8-3 on aggregate.

Since the 7-2 second-leg drubbing at the Camp Nou, Gordon has only featured twice for the Magpies, his last appearance coming in the 2-1 defeat at Crystal Palace on April 12.

Gordon didn’t play in any of Newcastle’s remaining six games, missing AFC Bournemouth and Arsenal with a hip injury before being an unused substitute against Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest, West Ham United and Fulham.

Howe admitted that Gordon’s omission was with a “partial view on the future.”

Newcastle United already planned for a big exit

Newcastle chief executive officer David Hopkinson first hinted in March that there would be at least one major sale this summer. As well as Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Tino Livramento have been linked with potential exits.

Hopkinson and sporting director Ross Wilson have a massive few months coming up as they look to rebuild the playing squad with Howe after recording a poor 12th-place finish in the Premier League.

And by selling Gordon early in the window, it should hopefully unlock the club’s spending power and ability to start shopping around for incomings now.

Howe’s side will need a replacement for Gordon, as his departure leaves Harvey Barnes as the team’s only recognised left winger.
