Tottenham ‘in the running’ for Colombian – Sunderland’s task grows difficult

Sunderland have constantly been interested in a move for Bologna’s Jhon Lucumi but can now face competition from Tottenham.

Last summer, the Black Cats pushed for the defender’s signature. The player and his entourage were also keen on the deal, with Lucumi’s agent clarifying this in an interview.

SportWitness covered the saga extensively as Bologna rejected Sunderland’s offer and appeared quite happy to keep him.

Now, they have failed to tie him to a new deal. Lucumi’s current contract runs out in the 2027, which makes his exit this summer very likely.

Tottenham are now in the picture and can make a summer move.

Lucumi unlikely to stay in Italy

Il Resto Del Carlino report Bologna could lose a host of their players in the summer. It is uncertain whether Remo Freuler or Riccardo Orsolini can depart but there is no doubt Lucumi will leave due to his contract situation.

AC Milan and Juventus have both failed to qualify for the Champions League, putting them out of the picture for Lucumi’s signature. Other Italian clubs are also likely to struggle, with Premier League a more likely destination.

Sunderland remain in the picture and could compete with Inter Milan and AS Roma. But it is Tottenham who are now ‘in the running’ and can move for the Colombian.

Bologna’s valuation is currently unknown but a discount from last summer is likely. Regis Le Bris’ side offered €28m at that point and there is every chance the centre-back could be available for around €20m this time around.

Senesi deal done for Spurs

Even if Lucumi would’ve suited Roberto De Zerbi’s system, he seems to be an alternative for Marcos Senesi. A deal for the Argentine seems to have been sealed.

This should come as encouragement for Sunderland and an appealing factor is their qualification for Europe.

The 28-year-old has played in the Champions League and the Europa League regularly in the last two seasons. Sunderland can guarantee him that now and have a major chance in signing a their long-term target
