Barry Bannan is regarded as a modern-day SWFC legend
Chris Waddle could see Barry Bannan return to Sheffield Wednesday in a player-coach role.
Bannan, 36, left for Millwall in January after 11 years and 477 appearances for The Owls. The midfielder signed an 18-month deal at Millwall, who narrowly missed out on automatic promotion to the Premier League and then lost to eventual play-off winners Hull City in the semi-finals.
As The Star has previously reported, a return to S6 for Bannan is possible and he is thought to be open to it. However, with a year still left on his Millwall contract, questions remain about how a deal could be struck.

Bannan was not a regular starter for Millwall. Despite impressing as a substitute in the goalless play-off semi-final first leg against Hull, he was once again left on the bench for the return leg, which Hull won 2-0. The Tigers beat Middlesbrough 1-0 in the final at Wembley with a last-gasp strike from former Sheffield United striker Oli McBurnie.
‘Baz’ has taken steps towards achieving his coaching badges and many Wednesdayites have expressed a wish to see him return to the club as a coach.
“Barry has been a great servant to Wednesday,” Waddle told BOYLE Sports, who offer the latest football odds. “There’s talk of him coming back. I could see Barry coming back as a player-coach but let’s be honest, if they’re serious about getting out of League One and doing well in the Championship if they go up, they need to get in players of a good age, from good stables, and they need to build a side to compete at a higher level.
“I don’t want to hear excuses that everybody was on their way out, or that they’ve signed 15 players this season to play in League One who they’ll have to get rid of next summer if they’re going to play in the Championship. It doesn’t work, football-wise. Wednesday have to start building now with the idea that if they do go up, they can compete in the Championship by adding two or three players, not another 10. “
