‘Disaster’ - More agony for Alexander Isak after Newcastle United x Liverpool transfer

Alexander Isak cost £125million and scored just three Premier League goals for Liverpool last season.

Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist have crowned Alexander Isak as the Premier League’s biggest flop for 2025-26.

That will come as no surprise given his demise since Newcastle United. The Swede suffered several injuries - including a broken leg - to endure a nightmare debut campaign at Liverpool.

It should also not shock anyone that Isak has garnered little sympathy on Tyneside. The 26-year-old was idolised at St James' Park a year ago but refused to train or play to force through his controversial exit.

Alexander Isak… flop of the season?

Isak - a British record signing at £125million - finished his first season as a Liverpool player with just three Premier League goals. For context, he netted 27 times across all competitions.

Speaking on talkSPORT, legendary broadcaster Stelling named Isak as his flop of the season. He said: “There are a few contenders here, some of them at Stamford Bridge. It hasn’t worked out for Liam Delap. It hasn’t worked out for Jamie Gittens. (But) you know what, I think there is more to come from both of those two, so I wouldn’t write them off by any means.

“It hasn’t worked out for Alejandro Garnacho either. But for me, just because of the hoo-ha beforehand and the humungous £125million price tag, I’m afraid the worst signing, as it is now for me, goes down as Alexander Isak. Three goals and one assist, you don’t get much for your £125million, do you?”

Ally McCoist on Alexander Isak

Rangers icon McCoist agreed - calling the move a “disaster” for all involved. He added: “That’s not up for debate, we are agreeing (on Isak). As you say, the whole hoo-ha, which got to the stage (that) it was boring, everybody in tears. Obviously, injuries haven’t helped, I get that.

“The price tag, you talk about the pressure on Arne Slot next season. There is so much pressure on Isak to attempt to pay back some of that fee. It’s been a disaster.”
