Barcelona President goes public on Anthony Gordon signing

Barcelona President Joan Laporta has gone public for the first time on the club signing Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.

Things moved fast on Wednesday with it revealed that Barca had put in a formal offer of €80m (Approx £69.3m) for the United star.

Then early last night the news came that Newcastle United had accepted the Barcelona bid.

Anthony Gordon set to fly into Barcelona today (Thursday) to take his medical and complete the move.

The very reliable David Ornstein at The Athletic saying his information was a deal had been agreed for the £69.3m plus a sell-on clause had also been included as part of the deal offered by Barcelona.

The Barcelona President confirming now that the Anthony Gordon signing is set to be concluded. Joan Laporta going public on the imminent transfer for the first time: “The Gordon deal is being done but it is not completed yet. I have already been informed about everything.”

A bit of confusion about the transfer fee and how it is put together but looking at what they are saying in the Spanish media it appears to be €70m (Approx £60.64m) up front fee plus €10m (Approx £8.66m) in add-ons, making up a total of €80m (Approx £69.3m). So this rather than €80m (£69.3m) plus add-ons as had been suggested in the English media last night. Though that £69.3m total deal having the sell-on clause on top of that, as reported by David Ornstein.

The reports from Spain now saying that Barcelona Sporting Director Deco met Newcastle United officials this week in London to negotiate and agree a deal.

There appears to have been a clear determination from both Anthony Gordon and Newcastle United to get a deal done before the World Cup finals. In only four days time the England squad fly to the United States on 1 July to begin their preparations with a training camp and warm up friendlies, ahead of the opening group match on 17 June against Croatia.

This early sale of Anthony Gordon will also give Newcastle United far more strength in the summer 2026 transfer window and especially their ability to get incoming deals done early as well. Here’s hoping.
