Does Crystal Palace’s historic Conference League win impact Sunderland’s Europa League campaign?

Sunderland fans have questioned whether Crystal Palace’s European success changes the Black Cats’ route.

Crystal Palace’s Conference League triumph does not negatively impact Sunderland’s place in next season’s Europa League.

There had been some speculation after Palace’s win that Sunderland could be forced into Europa League qualifying rounds, or made to play extra games before reaching the league phase. That is not the case.

Sunderland’s place in the Europa League was secured through their Premier League finish, with Régis Le Bris’ side ending the season seventh after a historic final-day win over Chelsea at the Stadium of Light. Palace’s success does not remove that place, does not push Sunderland into the Conference League and does not alter their route into the competition.

Why Palace’s win does not change Sunderland’s place

Palace’s Conference League success secured them a place in next season’s Europa League as winners of a UEFA competition, meaning they join Sunderland in the competition.

For Sunderland, the key point is simple. Palace have qualified for the Europa League through winning a UEFA competition. Sunderland qualified through their domestic league position. Those are separate routes, and Palace’s win does not take anything away from the Black Cats.

Sunderland’s final-day victory over Chelsea saw them leapfrog into seventh, with Brentford and Brighton failing to win elsewhere. That was enough to secure Europa League football through the Premier League table.

No extra qualifying games for Sunderland

In practical terms, Palace’s win simply adds another English club to next season’s European picture. It does not mean Sunderland have to qualify again. It does not create an extra hurdle. It does not place Sunderland’s Europa League spot at risk. The Black Cats are not heading into qualifying rounds because of Palace’s win, and their route into the competition remains protected by their league position.

There is also the question of whether Sunderland could face Palace in Europe. Under the usual UEFA draw restrictions, clubs from the same association are kept apart in the league phase, meaning Sunderland and Palace would not be expected to meet at that stage.

The bigger picture for Sunderland

A meeting could only become possible later in the competition if both sides progressed far enough. The bigger picture is that English football will have a major presence in Europe next season once again, and Sunderland will be part of it for the first time since 1973-74.

For the Black Cats, that remains the headline. A year after winning promotion through the Championship play-offs, Sunderland finished seventh in the Premier League and secured Europa League football after a remarkable campaign under Le Bris.

Palace’s success is a brilliant story in its own right, but it does not change Sunderland’s achievement or their European route. The Black Cats are in the Europa League; they are not heading for qualifying rounds because of Palace, and preparations can continue for a campaign that will include both Premier League and European football.
