Crystal Palace's legendary Conference League triumph could see the Premier League lose their additional Champions League place after next season. The Eagles overcame Rayo Vallecano 1-0 in Wednesday's final to cap Oliver Glasner's historic spell in south London with a third trophy and maiden European honour.
The coefficient formula that calculates victories in Europe will alter due to the nine teams who have secured European football next season. According to the regulations, every win is valued at two coefficient points, with a draw valued at one point, and this total is then divided by the number of clubs the competing team's nation has in Europe.
This means a victory for English sides will see points they accumulate for each win or draw divided by nine next season, meaning a triumph will be valued at merely 0.222 points towards the nation's coefficient. That represents less than what Serie A or Bundesliga clubs would accumulate for a victory (0.285) as both divisions will have seven teams in Europe next season.
The potential loss of the additional spot could also be jeopardised by how deep the likes of Bournemouth and Sunderland can advance in their respective competitions, considering their lack of European pedigree. England's coefficient could also be dented by Brighton's participation in the Conference League, with all three clubs facing more challenging group stage draws as lower-seeded sides. Should they suffer early exits from European competition, their poor showings could drag down England's overall points coefficient.
This means at least three English clubs must realistically reach either the semi-final or final stage across the three competitions. English sides do have the chance to accumulate bonus points through Europe's league phase format, depending on where they finish in their respective league tables.
Topping the Champions League phase earns a maximum of 12 bonus points, while finishing first in the Europa League yields six points and topping the Conference League table brings four points. Additional points are also awarded for each knockout round a team progresses through, ranging from 1.5 points per round in the Champions League down to 0.5 points in the Conference League.
Liverpool's fifth-place finish secured them an additional Champions League berth for next season, with Arsenal, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace all having reached their respective European finals.
