West Ham man can be ‘one of the most spectacular transfers’ – Club want guarantees first

Signing Niclas Füllkrug from West Ham United this summer would be ‘one of the most spectacular transfers’ for Werder Bremen.

BILD report on the 33-year-old today and how his former club would be delighted to welcome him back if they can do the deal this summer.

West Ham severance

The newspaper explains Niclas Füllkrug can imagine a return to the Weser River after two disappointing years in England.

They’re open to the idea to. On paper, at least, he’s seen as a major asset. Even better, the deal should be feasible from a financial perspective as well.

That’s because West Ham are planning for life without the striker following relegation to the Championship. His ‘hefty’ salary of €4.5m net per year, simply needs to be taken off of the books.

Füllkrug is willing to take a pay cut on that sum. He would be helped by a potential severance package from West Ham this summer.

Sport Witness covered a report earlier this week stating that the two parties could cancel his contract in the coming months.

Werder need guarantees

Werder, for their part, need a striker who guarantees goals. Füllkrug did that during his previous spell, so the move ‘would only make sense’.

The big problem is his injury record since joining West Ham. He’s spent 308 days out injured since September 2024 to date. That’s a concern, as Werder want players, they can rely on.

That’s something coach Daniel Thioune emphasised in a recent interview. “We want to find a good mix and continue to be bold in our decisions. Sometimes you get the chance,” he said.

Perhaps if the striker can prove himself to his former club, they’ll be ready to move to bring him home. With him open to the idea at least, the possibility is certainly there. But it might depend on that potential severance package from West Ham first.
