Former Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson won’t be staying at West Ham United next season, it seems.

Wilson joined the Hammers as a free agent last summer after departing Newcastle at the end of his contract. The 34-year-old arrived from AFC Bournemouth for £20million in 2020, scoring 49 goals in 130 appearances for the Magpies.

There was strong talk of Wilson first leaving West Ham in January, but his 92nd-minute winner away to Tottenham Hotspur convinced all parties he should stay. Wilson had then been expected to sign a contract extension until 2027 but is seemingly on the lookout for a new club.

The Hammers are yet to announce their retained list as they prepare for life in the Championship, but it appears Wilson has taken it upon himself to announce his exit after posting an emotional message on social media.

Wilson also appeared to take aim at his lack of game time, having been restricted to just three since February starts under boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

“It hurt,” Wilson wrote on Instagram. “We have failed as a team and definitely fallen short of everyone’s expectations.

“It was well documented that I had a history with West Ham, yet from the moment I arrived, I felt nothing but welcomed by all the fans here.

“I felt really good and positive coming into this season, and I believe I could have contributed more given the opportunity. As you could see, my time on the pitch was very limited at times, but that was out of my control. I’ve always trained hard, kept my integrity, and given my all whenever I’ve been allowed to wear the iconic Claret and Blue shirt.

“I’m sad and extremely disappointed that it has ended this way. This club deserves so much better because there are so many unbelievable people behind the scenes that you fans don’t always get to see.

“For now, all I can say is thank you. Thank you to everyone who supported us. Your passion is amazing, and I truly hope you return to the Premier League, where you belong, as soon as possible.

“Take care, Callum.”
