Newcastle United are yet to make a move for Middlesbrough star Hayden Hackney - but the midfielder has SIX top-flight teams in the hunt for his signature this summer.
Hackney is being looked at as a possible summer signing by Tottenham Hotspur, Everton, Leeds, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Brentford and should cost less than the £25m tag on his shoulders last January.
The Boro star could leave the Riverside this summer and has just one year left on his current deal with the Championship side's failure to win promotion increasing his chances of an exit..
The 23-year-old played in the 1-0 loss to Hull City that left Boro devastated following an emotionally charged play-off campaign, which resulted in the Teessiders being beaten by Southampton before the Saints were expelled.
As revealed by Chronicle Live in January, the Magpies have run the rule over Hackney this season, but despite Newcastle being made aware of his likely availability this summer, they have not followed up so far.
Hackney stated that he was settled at Boro back in January and said then: "This is what I’ve wanted to do ever since I was a kid - play for Middlesbrough.
"Winning promotion with Middlesbrough would mean everything to me. I don’t know how I’d be, but I know I’d be over the moon. That is the dream."
But with Boro consigned to another season in the second tier, they may have to cut their cloth accordingly after missing out on a £200m promotion jackpot with those riches going to Hull instead.
Hackney was the subject of a £25m bid from Ipswich Town last summer but ended up staying at Boro where he went on to make 41 appearances, scoring six goals.
Newcastle are looking for a right-back, a goalkeeper, a midfielder and a winger, and Hackney would be deemed a popular signing by fans, but other top-flight clubs are edging ahead in the race to sign him.
