The task for Leeds United this summer is ensuring we have a transfer window that keeps us at arm’s length from the three promotion clubs.
United have upset the media narrative alongside Sunderland this season. It was constantly suggested that it’s near impossible for promotion clubs to bridge the Premier League gap.
Because of that, it shouldn’t be seen as a foregone conclusion that Leeds are safe next season. Hull City, Ipswich Town and Coventry City are now in our shoes.
How each Premier League club fares might well hinge on the shift from PSR to yearly Squad Cost Ratio measurements. For Leeds, the potential to grow with huge revenue expected is vast. And, that ought to be reflected in the club’s long-term ambition.
Coming into this summer, though, it has big implications for the clubs coming into the top flight. Finance expert Kieran Maguire expects all three promoted teams to have plenty of money to throw at staying in the division.
When asked by a Hull fan how much the Tigers can expect to spend and stay clear of SCR’s sanctions, Maguire stated they can “easily” spend £100m.
On top of that, Maguire notes how Hull and Coventry could both potentially match previous big spends. Maguire cites the budgets of Ipswich Town in 24/25 (£113million) and even Sunderland in 25/26 (£148million).
Certainly. Ipswich spent nearly £113m last season, Sunderland spent £148m last summer. No reason why Hull and Cov can’t match that from a SCR point of view pic.twitter.com/7KxZmLQcCS

If Maguire is suggesting that these clubs can hit the £100million mark without facing breaches, then it shows you that money is there to be spent.
As a result, we can’t sit around this summer and expect that last summer’s business is enough to tide us over.
Paraag Marathe’s statement after our survival was confirmed does indicate that we’re going to spend every penny available to us.
How much that is remains to be seen. However, a few fringe players being sold for decent fees would open up a much greater budget for us.
If we have another window of the same calibre as summer 2025, survival could be a foregone conclusion. But, we need to have that window first.
