Leeds United have multiple players with contracts that expire in just over a month’s time, including Illan Meslier.
Daniel Farke has been forced into some brutal decisions in his Leeds squad ever since he took over. But, none have been more cutthroat than Illan Meslier being cast aside.
Despite Farke giving Meslier a surprisingly long tether in the Championship, he’s been frozen out of plans for almost 14 months.
Sevilla aiming to secure Illan Meslier free transfer as Leeds United allow contract expiry
Ever since Karl Darlow took the Frenchman’s starting spot away to Luton Town last season, it’s been inevitable that Meslier will leave Elland Road at some point.
No transfer materialised in the summer of 2025, or in January this year. That means Meslier is going to be leaving Leeds instead by virtue of a free transfer.
With his contract expiring, it’s reported by Orgullo Biri that Sevilla are lining up a move to bring the 26-year-old to La Liga.
Sevilla have been circling the drain in Spain’s top flight for some time, not helped by Victor Orta. They avoided the relegation zone by just one point this season. Although, the division was incredibly tight as Sevilla finished 13th, as one point separated six teams.
Meslier is seen as a “recoverable” player as his contract expires off the back of three testing years with Leeds. This market opportunity, though, is also being considered by Turkish giants Besiktas as well, meaning Sevilla may have to act fast.
Illan Meslier could still have a great career after Leeds United exit
Rewind five years and everyone was raving about Meslier as one of the hottest goalkeeping prospects in Europe. And it was justified too, breaking records left and right in the Premier League under Marcelo Bielsa.
However, confidence is such a make-or-break facet to a ‘keeper’s game. For Meslier, Leeds’ slide down the table in 2021-2023 saw him hammered between the sticks and he’s never recovered.
To me, there’s still a talented goalkeeper there that hopefully uses this experience as motivation to get back to his best.
He’s only 26, which is still relatively young as goalkeepers go. Just look at Darlow, it’s taken him until 35 to arguably reach his peak.
