Gordon is on the verge of joining La Liga champions Barcelona for £69.3million to bring an end to his three-and-a-half years at St James’ Park.

The 25-year-old joined Newcastle from Everton for £45million in January 2023 and has gone on to score 39 goals and register 28 assists in 152 appearances.

Gordon’s departure has been on the cards for the past month, after he was an unused substitute in each of the Magpies’ final four Premier League matches of the campaign.

Eddie Howe admitted Gordon’s omission was, in part, due to the uncertainty surrounding his future.

Alan Shearer ‘not upset’ that Anthony Gordon is leaving Newcastle United

Shearer believes the outcome is good for both parties, reminding people that no player is bigger than the football club.

“Good luck to Anthony Gordon,” Shearer told Betfair. “I am not upset that he is leaving, as no player is bigger than the club.

“I think Newcastle have been scarred by the [Alexander] Isak situation and can never be put in that situation again.

“I mean, clearly, Anthony Gordon wants to leave so, I guess Newcastle's thoughts are, ‘well, if that is the case, we get what we can for him, and then we start and plan, and never be put in that same situation again’.

“Is it enough of a fee? I think it's a good deal for both. I think it is for both parties, for Anthony and for Newcastle. Clearly, he wants to leave. The manager hasn't played him for the last five or six weeks.

“I think there's a part of.. you'd never want to be bitten twice, like they did last summer. Whether they could have got more for him, I don't know. I guess the timing is right now so they can plan. And if that's the case, and it suits Newcastle, it's the right deal and it's the right timing then, yeah, it's fine. If it's £70million or whatever it is, then they've made a healthy profit on him.”

Shearer has no doubts over Gordon’s talents, but questioned whether his heart was in Newcastle.

“I know he's scored goals this season, mostly in the Champions League,” Shearer added. “He got six league goals, three were penalties. But there's no doubt there's talent there, but if there's talent there that's not fully into it then you have to let them go and they have done. I think it's a good deal for both parties. The quicker the deal was done, the better so Newcastle could plan and move on.

“I'm not upset at all that he's leaving. I guess when a player wants to move and has made it clear his heart's not in playing for the club anymore, that's fine, you do what's best for the football club.

“No one's bigger than the club, so it's a good deal for Newcastle, first and foremost, and it's a really good deal for Anthony Gordon, so, good luck to him.

“You thank him for what he's done. I think he has, without doubt, split opinions with his time at Newcastle. But yeah, good luck to him. I've got no issues.”
