'This hurts' - Ex-Leeds United player Crysencio Summerville breaks West Ham relegation silence…

The winger's West Ham side beat Leeds United 3-0 last weekend but were relegated regardless.

Former Leeds United winger Crysencio Summerville admits his West Ham side let themselves down in suffering Premier League relegation.

Summerville was part of a Hammers side that beat Leeds 3-0 on the final day last weekend, but it mattered little with relegation rivals Tottenham Hotspur beating Everton. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side finished the campaign on 39 points, two shy of Spurs and eight behind a Whites side that sat comfortably in 14th.

Nuno has since decided to stay at West Ham in a bid to win instant promotion but with a reported £150million to raise through sales, it remains to be seen which players will join him. Summerville is among the squad members most likely to command a serious fee thanks to his impressive end to the season.

In a similar situation with Leeds in 2023, Summerville was keen to stay and fight for Championship promotion at a time when plenty of others jumped ship. He starred during Daniel Farke’s first campaign in charge but play-off final defeat to Southampton preceded a summer move, with West Ham triggering a release clause worth just over £25million plus add-ons.

In an end-of-season post on Instagram, Summerville wrote: “It’s difficult to find the right words for the disappointment we all share. It feels like we’ve let ourselves down, but even more importantly, all of you from the Irons family who stood by us throughout this difficult season.

“One thing I do know how to express is my sincere appreciation for your unbelievable support. In the hardest moments of the season, your support gave us hope again, pushed us to fight harder, and made us believe until the very end. Maybe that’s also why this hurts even more, because we came so close, it makes it even harder to accept.

“Through every setback and every difficult moment, you stayed with us and kept us going. Your support never went unnoticed. West Ham United is too big, too special, and too powerful to stay down. The comeback starts now.”

Summerville’s immediate focus will now turn to the World Cup, with the winger earning himself a call-up to the Netherlands national team just in time for a major tournament. It’s a first-ever inclusion for the former Leeds man, who was set to represent his country in March but for an injury.

As the YEP reported on Thursday, social media reports around the time of Summerville’s exit suggesting the presence of an international appearance-related bonus are wide of the mark. Leeds won’t receive any kind of cash boost if Summerville features in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Summerville could come up against two current Leeds players in the group stage, with the Netherlands set to face Gabriel Gudmundsson’s Sweden and Ao Tanaka’s Japan. The fourth nation in that group is Tunisia.
