West Ham can expect an approach for Mateus Fernandes by Manchester United in the coming weeks, according to reports.
The Portuguese midfielder impressed in his maiden season for the Hammers after a £40m switch from Southampton last summer.

But West Ham’s confirmed relegation from the Premier League means Fernandes will almost be sold in order to raise funds, as the club prepares for life in England’s second tier.
The 21-year-old has been the subject of increased transfer speculation in recent months as West Ham’s league status remained uncertain. It was even claimed by some outlets that even if Premier League survival was secured, Fernandes would still likely be on his way out of London Stadium.
West Ham confirmed record losses of over £104m earlier this year and will need to raise more than £100m in transfer funds this summer to help satisfy profit and sustainability rules.
Given Fernandes’ age, quality and recent graduation to Portugal’s first-team squad – despite missing out on the World Cup – he is one of only a few players at the club who can realistically command a sizeable transfer fee.
Indeed, it’s more than likely that West Ham will still be able to make a profit on the midfielder this summer but it won’t be as much as the £80m valuation they reportedly placed on him before relegation was confirmed.
Mateus Fernandes wants Man United
According to iPaper, Manchester United are preparing to make a move for Fernandes in the coming weeks, citing his ability to receive the ball over the pitch as the perfect addition to Michael Carrick’s midfield, as well as providing competition for Kobbie Mainoo.
The report also claims the Red Devils are Fernandes’ first pick this summer, presuming he already has been made aware of interest from other clubs.
Fernandes’ desire to play at Old Trafford may also be driven by the chance to play alongside compatriot and namesake Bruno Fernandes, whose 21 assists this season broke the record for the most assists in a single Premier League campaign.
Regardless, it’s expected that United will look to open discussions with the Hammers over Fernandes’ services imminently, with the summer transfer window set to open in just a couple of weeks.
